Here's the last part (I promise!)
EXT. ROOFTOP - SUNSET
Sam stands on the edge of the rooftop, bundled in his coat
against the chilling wind, watching the sun set behind the
cityscape. The shadow beast that stalked Tom Davies sits at
attention patiently. Being a good sentinel, its ears
twitching constantly on look out. The peace is broken when
the beast rises to a snarling alert facing away from Sam.
SAM
Congratulations. You found me,
brave hero.
Jake is emerging from the stairwell door. He walks closer to
Sam, ignoring the growling monster.
SAM
Was one day enough?
He looks over his shoulder and meets the burning glare Jake
is giving him.
SAM
Guess not.
He turns back to the sunset, a deep sigh releasing.
SAM
Still. Good. That's good.
JAKE
Good.
SAM
Mm-hmm...means you are ready.
JAKE
How can you possibly think, after
all this, I'm here to do what you
want?
Sam abruptly pivots in place to face Jake. This seems to be
a signal the beast has been waiting for. It lunges with all
teeth and claws reaching for Jake's flesh. He stands his
ground, eyes flaring with energy, throwing his arm out in a
dismissive gesture, like swatting a fly. In mid-leap the
beast disintegrates into a green energy crackling mist
that's carried away in the breeze. Sam applauds.
SAM
Oh, you are SO ready. Lana would be
proud of you.
Releasing his own snarl, Jake charges toward Sam, he's
attempting a normal attack, no abilities. Sam easily side
steps, reaching out to swing Jake around before his momentum
carries him off the roof.
SAM
Really? You can't get to me like
that. Show me what you can do!
Jake regains his footing before facing Sam. He attempts to
attack again, still no sign of using his abilities.
With an annoyed roll of his eyes, Sam flicks his hand toward
Jake. Instantly, a rolling, concussive force slams into
Jake, hurtling him across the roof to impact with the
stairwell door. He's shaken, but otherwise not harmed.
SAM
I told you. It's not going to work,
those old methods. Embrace your
potential. Are you really going to
waste your sister's sacrifice? Your
wife's? They gave their lives to
bring a new start for the world.
You should be celebrating with me!
Jake pulls himself to his feet, gaze leveling with Sam. He's
pissed.
JAKE
No. They were murdered. They didn't
choose it!
Eyes flashing, Jake sends a huge wave of blue energy lashing
out at Sam. Sam blocks it before grinning proudly.
SAM
There we go! I knew my powerful
Jake was in there somewhere.
JAKE
You talk too damn much!
He rushes Sam, fist raised again as if throwing a normal
punch, but just as he starts to swing his arm forward he
uses his energy to enhance the attack. Sam is caught off
guard by this tactic, failing to dodge. He's forced a good
distance away, sprawled across the rooftop.
SAM
Ha!
JAKE
Just stop this. You're not getting
what you want.
SAM
It's inevitable. This is all just a
final test to make sure you're
ready. And can I say, good job me?
Because that punch of yours, wow!
Their fight is fierce. Each man lashing out with their own
energies hitting with explosive force. As the battle
progresses across the increasingly damaged cityscape, Jake
proves hes has better control of his abilities.
Concrete dissolves under his fists.
Jake matches Sam in mid-air leaps, throwing terrifying
amounts of energy into his attacks.
Sam seems to be happy about this, much to Jake’s annoyance.
EXT. NORTH PARK - EVENING
The sun is about to disappear past the horizon but the two
warriors are oblivious to the darkening sky.
A seam of brilliant light slips across the sky slowly
slicing open to reveal huge grotesque monsters barely held
back from entering the world. Huge clawed fingers reach to
either side of the ripped space as if trying to pull the gap
open further.
Sam and Jake's fight has moved into the park.
The creature in the sky cries out a shattering scream of
frustration.
SAM
Hear that? They're ready for you.
Jake takes the opportunity of Sam's fallen guard to land a
particularly strong attack. Sam is knocked to the ground,
injured.
SAM
Heh, that's it. Finish it. I'm done
now. I won't fight you anymore.
JAKE
You're giving up?
SAM
No.
JAKE
Then this isn't over.
SAM
Not until you kill me. Then. Then,
you can take your rightful place.
You'll get all of my power combined
with your own to break open the
Veil.
The creature in the sky is still struggling to push through,
roaring out its anger at being blocked.
JAKE
There's been enough death already.
Even after everyone you've hurt, I
can't kill you, Sam.
SAM
Even if I tell you I'm the one who
killed Lana? I made her pull the
trigger.
JAKE
What?
SAM
Oh, she fought it. She was so
tough, so strong, so stubborn, just
like you Jake. But I was
controlling her.
Jake's fist impacts with Sam's face, throwing him to the
ground again. Jake roughly pulls him up to be face to face.
Sam locks eyes with him then laughs a bit and grins widely.
JAKE
You think human life can just be
toyed with like that? You think
you're so much better than everyone
else? Huh? Answer me, Sam! Because
all of this, all of the people
you've killed, can't be explained
away by having to do your job!
Sam's smile slips away in the face of Jake's anger.
SAM
The truth?
JAKE
Please.
SAM
I am better than everyone else. I
have powers you couldn't even
imagine, Jake. I've lived so long
now. I just want to finally finish
what I was created for so I can
stop. I can't die until you take my
place.
JAKE
I'm not becoming like you.
SAM
Heh, you have no choice. This was
all started centuries ago. If you
don't kill me and become the next
Herald, then that-
Sam points to the still struggling monster in the sky, the
rip has become bigger and hordes of phantoms circle in wait
for its entrance.
SAM (CONT'D)
-will keep trying to enter our
world. It will rip and tear until
this planet is dust. My job was to
ensure a Herald existed to allow
the old gods an easy passage. I'm
saving the world, Jake.
Jake releases Sam who crumples to the ground. He watches the
sky, breath quick and heavy. It takes a moment, but his face
tensed in anger fades to understanding.
JAKE
I trusted you more than anyone, and
now here we are fighting to the
death. You've taken everything away
from me, just like you said.
Sam sits quietly watching the man staring at the sky. Jake
closes his eyes.
JAKE (CONT'D)
You're right. I wanted a start
over. I have the chance here to do
that. You deserve to die Sam
Harrington. But. I will not take
your place. I'm changing the rules.
SAM
What? You can't!
JAKE
I'm sorry. Sam, you can move on
too, knowing that in the end I
forgive you.
Jake smiles, his eyes are glowing with a gentle, smokey
blue. For once, Sam is stunned speechless.
JAKE (CONT'D)
I've seemed to learn what it's like
being a victim of fate's plans. No
more running away.
SAM
Jake, I...thanks.
Jake swallows then nods. Sam pulls himself to his knees,
head bowed, but with a smile. Jake raises his hand toward
Sam, blue energy collecting around his palm.
A quick movement. The collected energy slices into Sam. Sam
drops to the ground unmoving.
In the next instant green energy explodes from Sam's body,
seeking out Jake and latching onto him.
36. Jake is completely unlocked. All of Sam’s energy pours
into him just as Sam had explained. As he turns to face the
monstrous Ancients, still clawing their attempts to enter
the world, he makes his stand against them. He refuses to do
their will and uses everything he has to banish them back to
the other side of the Veil. All energy drained from his
body, Jake collapses on the spot.
37. Morning. Lana gently wakes her brother up. He squints
into the bright sunlight. As he sits up Lana disappears in
the glare of the Sun. He scans the park until he sees Lana
and Tom, Lisa and Charlie, Jane and Gran, all standing
together proud of him. Jake looks out over the demolished
city. Already, people are trying to rebuild. A man with
nothing to lose has found his purpose. He, like the city,
will rebuild and protect once again.
